Sembarita — Selaras, Membangun, Bercerita — means "in harmony, building, telling a story." It is who we are as much as what we do.
The economy forgets people. We were built to remember them.
Sembarita began with a simple, stubborn conviction: that no amount of aid replaces a relationship, and no strategy substitutes for someone who shows up, sits down, and stays. In West Java, we saw frontline charities doing extraordinary work in isolation, grassroots leaders with no platform, and communities treated as problems to be solved rather than people to be known.
So we built something in between — a foundation that doesn't compete with existing charities but connects them, doesn't replace local leadership but empowers it, and doesn't treat economics as separate from friendship, dignity, and encounter. We exist because belonging shouldn't be conditional, and because the people closest to the problem are usually closest to the solution.

Sembarita is founded
A small group of friends in Bandung begins meeting with frontline charities and grassroots leaders, asking what an ecosystem of relationships could look like.
Rumah Baca opens its doors
Our first sustained partnership begins — a reading house for children in the slums of North Jakarta, staffed in part by social reinclusion interns.
Standing with mothers in crisis
Through the pandemic, our partnership with Rumah Ruth deepens, and the Feminine Genius Collective begins its first skills-empowerment cohorts.
Blessing the Home and Chanaya Resort
Two dignity-centred enterprises take shape, proving that businesses built around people can also sustain them.
Oxford
Sembarita's model of friendship-led development is presented to an international audience for the first time.
With The Margins and the EOF Indonesia Hub
We publish our first anthology of stories from the margins, and formally launch Indonesia's hub within the global Economy of Francesco network.
Assisi
Sembarita returns to the international stage at the Economy of Francesco gathering in Assisi — Bandung's voice, carried further.
